Opportunities for Charitable Trusts and Funders

We welcome expressions of interest from charitable trusts and funders who wish to support this programme. There are opportunities to fund either part of the initiative:

  • Online Theory Training: Funding will help ensure that care leavers across the UK can access this essential training free of charge, equipping them with the knowledge and certification they need for independent living.

  • Simulated Home Environment: Support for this element will enable us to build and expand the training hub in Nottingham, where care leavers can gain hands-on experience in managing a home and developing practical life skills.

Helping Care Leavers Build Essential Life Skills

At Norman Galloway Homes, we are developing a proposal for a Life Skills Programme to  ensure care leavers can develop the knowledge and confidence to manage  their homes effectively. This programme is aimed at equipping care  leavers with the skills to maintain their living spaces, manage energy  usage, and handle home maintenance tasks.

Programme Structure

Part One: Online Theory Training (Planned Nationwide Access)

The online training module is designed to be accessible to care leavers across the UK for free. This part of the programme provides structured online learning through video tutorials, written guides, and interactive assessments. The objective is to equip care leavers with essential knowledge-based skills related to home maintenance, safety, and independent living. There will be over 100 practical skills to learn and 50 admin type skills in this theory part of the programme. Each module includes a short test, and upon successful completion, care leavers receive a certificate of achievement, which can be used as evidence when applying for social housing or independent accommodation. Part One will be developed and filmed with care leavers at our extended hub in Nottingham.

Part Two: Practical Life Skills Training (Planned Pilot in Nottingham)

We are extending our training hub space in Nottingham to develop a real-world learning environment where care leavers can practice hands-on home maintenance tasks in a   safe and supportive setting. The pilot will initially be rolled out to care leavers living in our accommodation in Nottingham, then expanding later to Care Leavers living in Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands Mayoral Region.

The training hub will allow care leavers to practice these skills in a simulated home environment with guidance from trained professionals. The aim is to build practical confidence so that participants feel ready to apply these skills in their own homes.
