At NGH, we believe in celebrating the resilience, progress, and achievements of the Care Leavers living in our accommodation. Life can present unique challenges, but we know that every milestone big or small deserves to be recognised and applauded.
Our "Young Person of the Week" initiative is a chance to shine a spotlight on these incredible young people, giving them the recognition they truly deserve.
Acknowledging the efforts and accomplishments of Care Leavers goes far beyond a simple gesture, it has the power to transform lives. For many Care Leavers, the journey to independence can feel challenging and, at times, isolating. Recognising their achievements not only boosts their confidence but also validates their hard work, determination, and resilience.
Here’s why it matters so much:
Building Confidence and Self-Belief:
Many Care Leavers face self-doubt, especially when navigating life without the usual family support systems. Celebrating their milestones reinforces their sense of self-worth and helps them believe in their abilities to overcome challenges and succeed.
Motivating Future Success:
Acknowledgement creates a ripple effect. By recognising what they’ve already achieved, Care Leavers are inspired to set bigger goals, work harder, and aim higher. Success, once recognised, becomes a driving force for further achievements.
Creating a Culture of Positivity:
For those working closely with Care Leavers—support workers, teachers, personal advisors—this is an opportunity to highlight positive stories and foster a supportive environment. Recognising success sets a powerful example for other young people and creates a culture of encouragement and celebration.
Reducing Feelings of Isolation:
Many Care Leavers may feel disconnected from traditional support systems or peers. Recognition helps them feel seen, valued, and connected to a wider community that appreciates their efforts.
Amplifying the Impact of Small Wins:
Sometimes, what may seem like a small milestone to others—like completing a course, securing a job interview, or sticking to a goal—is monumental for a Care Leaver. By celebrating these “small wins,” we emphasise that every step forward is meaningful and significant.
Inspiring Others:
Every story of success is a chance to inspire. When a Care Leaver is celebrated, their peers see that their efforts, too, can be recognised. It creates a ripple effect, motivating others to push through challenges and pursue their goals.
Shifting the Narrative:
Care Leavers often face stigma or stereotypes in society. Recognising their achievements challenges these perceptions and highlights their strength, resilience, and ability to thrive. It’s a chance to rewrite the narrative and showcase the potential of every young person.
